Breastfeeding

The nursing relationship is one of life's most rewarding and symbiotic.
No substance on earth can rival breastmilk; scientists have discovered at least
one hundred ingredients in it and are still discovering more. It is rapidly and
easily digested by babies, reducing colic, gas, and diarrhea; it is filled with antibodies,
providing immune protection against ear infections and innumerable other pathogens.
It contains essential fatty acids imperative for brain development. Nursing releases feel-good
hormones in mom and spurs recovery from birth.
While its positive properties are indisputable, many women face challenges
when they begin breastfeeding. In a culture where nursing too often happens
behind closed doors, many women attempt to nurse their infants having rarely, or
even never, seen it done firsthand.

With the right information and support,
almost every mother and child can establish
a mutually rewarding and beneficial
breastfeeding relationship. A private
breastfeeding class can be taken as part
of a comprehensive childbirth education series
or on its own, either prior to or after the birth
of your baby. A breastfeeding consultation will
cover:
• Proper latching and positioning techniques
• Establishing and encouraging milk supply
• Overcoming common obstacles; remedies to typical problems
• Detecting dehydration and jaundice
• Finding a breastfeeding-friendly pediatrician
• Addressing supply issues
• Pumping, breastmilk storage, and returning to work
